The replacement one day just walked into the square. This mysterious kingdom, which has sculpted our modern world to an astounding (and alarming) degree, once occupied an immense land area of over a million square miles extending from western Hungary/Austria eastward to the Aural Sea, north to the Upper Volga, and its southern region extending to the Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian seas. Then January’s sparrow appears on their doorstep.

Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things!

Western institutions and governments are hardly shy when it comes to demanding that their values and lifestyles be adhered to by all societies. The current debate confirms that elitist disdain for the demos is as alive in the 21st century as it was in ancient times. ‘If there are issues on which the populace at large should be trusted to vote, something as complicated and economically sophisticated as EU membership is definitely not one of them’, says the biologist and professional atheist Richard Dawkins.

But the navy would not budge—until an 11-year-old boy named Hunter Scott entered the picture. A humane and civilised society understands that this relationship should be protected and insulated from forces that would disrupt it. Values that are promoted artificially or administratively through campaigns of public education are often unable to win hearts and minds. After writing World Without End I wanted to write another book of the same sweep and length--but I didn't want to do another medieval story.

Surprisingly, though, slavery was not racially based in most of human history; racial slavery, that is, slavery that is predicated on race as a way of separating slave from free, is a creation of the seventeenth century. The growth of an interest in humanism led to the changes in the arts and sciences that form common conceptions of the Renaissance.
