I don't think all levers have that option but it is worth checking out on yours. It is interesting to note how quickly the stresses rapidly increase with a Harps size. Those extra three or four strings not only add an additional hundred weight of tension (they are usually heavy bass wire strings on large harps), they add 2 or more inches to the span between the top of the pillar and the sound box. Like the Witcher, the string set I found on this well-used Axline was probably not factory. I believe Triplett and Dusty both use bronze core strings in the bass, and these were steel core. There is a small jump in the total percent breaking strength (%TS) at the transition to wound nylon core nylon wrap strings, but it is not as dramatic as it was in the Witcher. The tension to length ratio drops evenly staying just above 1.0 at the bass end. The Eireann has been a real hit with hard core Celtic Traditionalists. The finely gauged incremental sizes of the Savarez monofilament strings yield some very smooth lines. Without any the nylon/nylon transition strings, the Tension, %TS and T/L all show a significant “jump” at that transition from monofilament to Steel core bronze wrap bass strings. When I play a descending scale on the harp, I can certainly hear that change, but this transition does not seem to bother many players. Despite many these differences, there are some interesting similarities among the four harps, Tension starts at 10-20 lbs, and tends to climb higher, reaching a maximum of 35-50 lbs in all four designs T/L Starts around 3 and drops to about 1. The Music Makers harp is an exception, falling to 0.4.

The middle of the soundboard, known as the centerstrip, is attached to the base of the strings and is usually made of beech. I'll try to give you an estimate ahead of time. Thanks for your expertise and service.” Jonelle Moore, MN Grand Harpsicle® Harp orders take 8-10 weeks to build. Here life is simple, no commuting - no traffic, no big taxes, no middle man. But unlike bowing a violin or plucking a lute or guitar (where the string sounds the pitch to which it is tuned), the wind causes harmonics to sound.

The special mahogany stain and veneer on the harp soundboard just make it glow. From the construction point of view it is also a well balanced design, because strings are pinned to the neck on either side (except in the case of some Spanish Arpa de dos ordenes), the instrument has a better string tension distribution than single rank harps. From the Grossly simplified Statics page we found that the neck of the harp can be idealized a simple truss with a 900lb distributed load. This load is counteracted at by the pillar and sound box as shown in the diagram below: Remember, these are idealized equations. In the real world, the neck of a harp is not as flat as a bridge. Acoustic or aesthetic considerations require that it have a sharp curve for mid-range strings. When I think about woods isotropic frailties I begin to understand why special consideration needs to be given to the neck which is notoriously prone to cracking and failure.

If you are building a harp from a kit or making one yourself without any standardized blueprints or specs sheet, you should consult with a lever harp maker to try and determine which strings will work best for you based on the amount of pressure your soundboard will take from the strings. Prices ranged from $250 to well over $3000 for the kinnor made in the Holy Land.
