If your world feels too weird, your readers won’t buy into it. During the Spanish Civil War, a young girl (Ivana Baquero) and her mother come under the protection of a cruel Captain while frightening creatures start appearing around her. I think part of the logic behind labeling The Graveyard Queen Series as paranormal romance is because I have a publishing history in romantic suspense. Literary magic realism originated in Latin America. But by dint of labeling it magic realist, the story’s context within a critical canon becomes simpler (particularly for those critics ignorant of fantasy’s history).
