According to Angel Flores, magical realism involves the fusion of the real and the fantastic, or as he claims, “an amalgamation of realism and fantasy.” The presence of the supernatural in magical realism is often connected to the primeval or magical “native” mentality, which exists in opposition to European rationality (See Myths of the Native ). The history of magical realism and its evolution as a reaction to realism is useful, however, in putting magical realism into a larger context among genres, and in putting The People of Paper in a larger context of magical realist works.

I wonder, then, why such a very very serious and very very emotional and very very “literary” (in a very, very outdated sense of the word) book of hers is the first to appear in English translation. García Márquez's story is a comic fantasia on that notion, while Almond's novel is a serious meditation, with a far different outcome. I have yet to definitely figure out if I accomplished my goal. And I do see where he is coming from, the roots of magical realism are to show something quite profound.

Hey, to make things a little more confusing there's also fabulist literature. Magical realists, on the other hand, portray the real world itself as having marvelous aspects inherent in it. She is the only one who actually feels for the rest of the characters and acts accordingly out of desire to protect her loved ones. With early Gothic enclosures the characters felt trapped and realized that they occupied a very precarious position in relation to both the villain and the outside world.
