Literally a center at the edge – where land meets sky, saltwater meets freshwater – the Sitka Center is a place where a diverse group of people and ideas converge, co-mingle and depart transformed.

Living sustainably means ecologically sensible practices such as reuse and recycling, water and power conservation, and reduction of trash and other wastes.

Schweitzer’s influential “Reverence for Life” ethic claims that all living things have a “will to live”, and that humans should not interfere with or extinguish this will (Schweitzer, 1923). Comparison: All four historians call for the study of environmental history as an interaction between and among the human and nonhuman components of the natural world.

Russian conservationists had pressed this long before the revolution. If not, and an objective standard is to be imposed, we are left with the enormous problem of discovering this standard and reaching consensus on it. The tree with the optimal likelihood score is presented here ( Fig. 13 and Supp. The intergenerational reproduction of species and intragenerational survival rates influence ecological interactions directly in the case of nonhuman individuals or as mediated by production in the case of humans.

The conclusion Darwin draws is obvious: "the individuals of the vegetable world may be considered as inferior or less perfect animals" (I, 73). The rituals and meditations, crystals and pentagrams, chanting and drum-beating used at ecological conferences and demonstrations to energize and raise group consciousness are ineffective in dealing with the serious ecological problems facing the planet.
